Springfield, Illinois - Saturday

Obama is having a big event in Springfield, Illinois this Saturday.  Perhaps his vp pick comes from that same state - and is new a Senator from NY.

After thinking that it's very unlikely, I've started to think that Hillary Clinton will be the vp candidate.

BTW, another possible pick from Illinois - Wesley Clark.

I would be very happy with Senator Clinton...

I would go Apesh*t for Wesley Clark as VP.

Obama/Clark would look very nice on the back of the Jeep.

Re: Springfield, Illinois - Saturday (none / 0)

I'm going to vote and work hard for Obama no matter who is the vp candidate.  And, as folks here know, I switched from Clinton to Obama back in January and have been critical of much of what she and Bill have done in the last months.  I am not sure who would be the very best vp nominee. However, what Democrat could not get excited about the prospect of such a ticket?

Re: Springfield, Illinois - Saturday (none / 0)

If Obama is smart and wants to win he would pick Hillary Clinton .

However she is not going to be the VP .

The election is Teetering right now , with the new Indiana poll showing a 6 point lead for Mccain , Obama is going to fall below 270 for the first time as Indiana would go into Mccain's column.

264 - 261 with VA as the tie breaker according to electoralvote - com.

Its early but Clinton should be a no brainer for Obama.

However she is not going to be the nominee

Re: Springfield, Illinois - Saturday (none / 0)

I might be proven wrong on this but I can't imagine Obama wants Bill as the third wheel on the ticket.  Whatever is going on with BC, and something odd clearly is, that is surely what would happen.

Here is a recent BC quote:

Speaking at the University of Nevada, the Democratic former commander-in-chief said, "Obviously, I favor Senator Obama's energy positions, and Democrats have been by and large the more forward-leaning actors. But John McCain has the best record of any Republican running for president on the energy issue and on climate change," according to the New York Times.

He has not been consistently and sufficiently supportive of Obama, and I think that becomes a problem.  Unfortunately, Hillary has not separated herself from him politically, they have remained a partnership, and I don't know how you even begin to deal with that in a situation where she becomes VP.

I believe that this is one of the ways that partnership has harmed her; I actually think Bill largely cost her the primary.

I have no problem with her as VP, but if I was in the presidential spot, with Bill looming, I think I very well might.

Re: Springfield, Illinois - Saturday (none / 0)

i believe you are right he doesnt want Bill around and thats one of the reasons he is not going to pick her.

but the consequence of that choice is that he would even make it harded for him to get into the whitehouse.

its a double edged sword , the mccain camp would be praying hard he doesn't pick her

Bill is definitely an issue and, frankly, I have wondered how much he really wants Hillary to be president or vp. There are things he's said that seem to have undermined her campaign quite a lot.

But although he has weaknesses, he also has strengths.

He should have said Obama was qualified in that ABc interview.

He obviously hasn't moved on totally but statements like that and Clinton's fisa vote tell me they knew for a while she wasn't in the running.

You can see the full interview here.

You'll probably be surprised. Bill is actually very complimentary towards Obama. (But very critical of the media, which is why they chose to report this in such a negative and slanted fashion.)

Re: perhaps, perhaps, perhaps... (none / 0)

It may have been a snide comment (I don't think so, as intent is difficult to judge) but the polls do matter, especially in what is proving to be a tight race.  One job of a VP candidate is to draw votes, and I believe that Sen. Clinton is uniquely positioned among the VP candidates to do just that.  Other candidates might do other VP jobs better (reinforcing the message, shoring up imagined or real weaknesses in policy positions), but Sen. Clinton could help swing some close states, like Indiana, into the D column.

Re: perhaps, perhaps, perhaps... (none / 0)

I have NEVER had a disdain for all things Clinton.

Please, CG, let's not do what Fox News and others do - oversimplify folks with whom we disagree and the criticize the false picture we've created.

I voted for Bill Clinton twice. I thought the impeachment was a travesty. I started out supporting Hillary and switched in January. And, yes, I was critical of some of what she did, particularly after it was mathematically impossible for her to win the pledged delegate lead. But that doesn't make me a hater and, again, would hope that we can be generous in spirit and kind to each other, since we are progressives who care to make this world better.

Well, I'd like to say in this in the nicest possible way -- Please don't comment on what you expected from me because you really don't know me very well.

(And, frankly, I don't think I'd say things like that to even my best friends nor my husband. It just seems presumptuous to me, as if I have some special insight into everything they might say or do. But perhaps we have different views about how one interacts with others.)

And I promise to do the same when it comes to commenting on things you write. I'll comment on what you actually wrote and not what I thought you'd say.

Can we make that deal?

Re: Springfield, Illinois - Saturday (2.00 / 2)

Yeah, too bad he has such a weak resume too:

Wesley Kanne Clark, KBE (born December 23, 1944) is a retired General of the United States Army. Clark was valedictorian of his class at West Point, was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to the University of Oxford where he obtained a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (Philosophy, Politics & Economics), and later graduated from the Command and General Staff College with a master's degree in military science. He spent 34 years in the Army and the Department of Defense, receiving many military decorations, several honorary knighthoods, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Clark commanded Operation Allied Force in the Kosovo War during his term as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO from 1997 to 2000.

Oh, yeah, Kosvo, that was the war we actually had a strategy and we won?

Wow, you wouldn't want the general that ran THAT campaign against the Iraq War crowd, would you?

Ok, but let's nominate Evan Bayh instead....

He will then appear with his running mate at noon the next day in Springfield, Illinois, CBS News chief political consultant Marc Ambinder reports.

Media reports today have suggested that Indiana Senator Evan Bayh, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine and Delaware Senator Joseph Biden as the names now atop Obama's list.
